Melbourne International Animation Festival: The Director’s Cut

Monday, September 16th, 2012, 7:30PM

The Globe Cinema
617 8th Avenue SW
$10 at the door, viewer discretion advised

The Melbourne International Animation Festival is one of the biggest animation fests in the world, and we’re stoked to have its executive director, Malcolm Turner, coming to Calgary to present a package of his favourite shorts from MIAF’s special programs over the last few years. He’s made the program especially for us, and will be introducing the shorts throughout. It’s gonna be pretty incredible.

So, what will you see? There’ll probably be some unaired pilots from Klasky Csupo, the husband-wife duo whose studio animated the first Simpsons shorts, along with Duckman, Rug Rats and plenty of others. There’ll be some UPA shorts–the American studio behind Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoingBoing, who helped usher in the “cartoon modern” style of the 1950s. Plus works from Polish masters and from the last 100 years of Lithuanian animation. The only through-line is that they’ve all blown the mind of one of the world’s top animation geeks.

This is a pretty big deal, folks. Some of these shorts basically haven’t even been seen outside of Melbourne, and Melbourne is pretty hard to get to from Calgary. Don’t miss out.

PIKA PIKA Animation Creation!
Collaboration with Beakerhead and Telus Spark

Sept 14th, 8 – 10PM
By the simmonds Mattress Building in the East Village

What’s Beakerhead, you ask? It’s a festival celebrating that magical place where art, science and engineering combine. What’s pika pika, you continue, apparently not yet satisfied? Basically, it’s a form of animation where you use LEDs or other bright lights to draw the action on long-exposure photos. You press on: Neat, but why are you bringing those things up right now? Because Quickdraw, along with the warriors of science over at the TELUS Spark, are leading a collaborative pika pika adventure at this year’s Beakerhead!

From 8pm til 12am on Saturday, September 14th, we’ll be roaming the East Village near the Simmons factory, making an animation with whatever kindly folk cross our path. We’ll do our best to be easy to find—just look for the bright lights and excitement.

This is a free event and you can drop in and out as you please, but we’re hoping you’ll RSVP to give us an idea of how many folks we’ll be working with. The more we have, the more elabourate we’ll make it, and the more awesome the end results.
