GIRAF screening: Canadian Shorts Package

November 7, 2013 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Malcolm-Sutherland-web

For as long as film animation has been around, Canadian artists have been at the forefront of the medium, pushing it to new levels artistically and technically. None of the films in this latest batch of Canadian animations are particularly about Canada or stereotypically Canadian things (except maybe niceness, which is one Canadian stereotype we'll concede to). What there is, is introspectiveness, trickery, loveable annoyingness, sacrifice, silliness, and also some experimentation in film that's in keeping with Canada's tradition for innovation.

There must be something in the Perrier—for whatever reason, France produced an absolutely stunning crop of animated shorts this year. From trips to the ballet to outer-space epics and an historical look at one of Paris' most famous models, these shorts run the gamut in terms of subjects and styles. And while some of it isn't for the faint of heart, there's also plenty to pull at the heartstrings.

November 9, 2013 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Peter-Burr-Cartune-Xprez-Special-Effect

It is an era in which special effects are no longer special. In much of today's cinema these effects are actually required to make the simulated event seem normal. In such a state, are there any visual effects that still feel 'special'? In this workshop, we will journey from the photochemical era to the digital era with our eyes on this question through the history of animation.

GIRAF screening: Spotlight on Mikey Please

November 9, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
MarilynMyller

London-based writer and director Mikey Please hasn't been making films for long, but his work already has as unique a style and as distinct a voice as artists twice his age. His thesis film was the BAFTA-winning The Eagleman Stag, a profound examination of aging and memory rendered entirely in foam and paper. After premiering at Sundance, it's gone on to play over 400 festivals and screenings (including GIRAF) and was shortlisted for an Academy Award.

age-of-curious

Sometimes you just need to see something strange. The films in this package are the ones that were too weird to see any time other than late at night. They're also some of the funniest, wackiest and most psychedelic films the festival has to offer — you'll be amazed they exist at all, when you're not too busy laughing hysterically or feeling profoundly uncomfortable. Be warned: These shorts ore for the brave and the thick-skinned, but the rewards are worth it.

As with Hemingway’s six word stories, we’ll find ways to say a lot with very little.

Funny, sweet, and imaginative, this package features some of our favourite picks of the festival.
